Kid's Bikes

Back in the day before the world saw Playstations, Xbox’s, Wiis and all the other computer games, the only thing that a kid would be doing is riding their bike. Thankfully the world has realised how fantastic being on a bike is, in whatever form it doesn’t matter! We have a fantastic range of kid’s bikes all budgets and ages. There are a few details to consider when purchasing a kid’s bike, and it is important to get it right so they enjoy their experience. Rutlandcycling.com have put their heads together to come up with the best kid’s bikes to suit all budgets and ages, plus that essential advice you will need to make your decision.

For younger children you need to purchase a bike that is simple and easy to use. Single speed bikes suit the youngest kids as multiple gears can be confusing to use, its hard enough learing to ride a bikes. Bikes which are designed for younger children will usually be pretty tough, enough to handle a few falls and will be able to be ridden on all types of surfaces.

For older children, it is important to have an idea of what they are most likely to use the bike for, riding outside the house, getting to and from school, going out with avid cyclists, this will help you choose the most suitable bike. Gears will help them to ride faster and keep up with you if you choose to ride as a family. Mountain bikes are a good choice to use at home on roads and paved trails. BMX bikes are meant tricks and jumping, off-road riding and racing, but only have a single speed so not so good if you plan to go out as a family.

First of all a key factor is the size of the bike. Kid's bike sizes are determined by wheel size diameter, this is differnt to adult bikes where its frame size. When they are big enough to ride a bike with 26 inch wheels the frame size becomes important. You do not want to buy a bike with the attitude that your child will grow into it. We know that is a little confusing to know what size you need, so Rutland Cycling have put together a brief guide to help you out. In Rutland Cycling's bike shops they also have life-size sizing towers. Make sure you always encourage your child to wear a helmet when they cycle - its good practice and could help them out one day! If the helmet is cool and exciting, it will make trying to get them to wear it easier, but make sure it fits them properly.
